sound in a hurry

We love Jill Sobule, and like other fans, have been waiting for this “kiss”-off of sorts with Katy Perry. In a recent interview with The Rumpus, Jill called Perry a “fucking little slut” for writing another song called “I Kissed A Girl.” Yes! At last! Sadly, we know Jill well enough to know she doesn’t mean it (not completely, at least) [DS].

In more beef news, that between Mariah Carey and Eminem is giving morning radio shows such much-needed non-Michael Jackson news. It has also been given a much-needed lyric to lyric breakdown on Blackbook. They hail Em as the winner but we’re picking Mimi because her song is funnier [Bbk].

Remember when you had to buy an entire album? Then came iTunes and you could use those albums like a buffet at Souplantation. Now Apple is working with the four remaining major labels to develop ways to entice people to buy entire albums. Problem with this is, Apple requires all songs from an album be available for individual purchase. A simple change in policy would seem to fix that, no? [RS]

A few weeks back, and with much fanfare, bitchy music blog Buddyhead returned to the LA blogosphere after recovering form financial and social ruin. Already they’re fighting with Marilyn Manson over founder Travis Keller‘s comments to the LA Weekly about a party session with Manson. It’s not the most material of beefs, but this is what happens after the parties are over, bros [DS].

ghostly discoveryIn the world of iPhone apps, there are the vainly useless and the useless rip-offs. For one reason or another, Ghostly, the best label from Detroit since Motown, has pulled ahead of the crowd with its new Discovery app. Not only is this little guy a free download, but it gives you access to Ghostly’s vast and varied catalog. You will literally discover new music as you toggle the “mood” selector along with other style variables – on a digital/organic and faster/slower continuum. Even if you’re familiar with the work of Matthew Dear or Christopher Willits, this is an opportunity to go deeper into their works while hearing things you probaby haven’t heard of. What a good use of technology and a roster. You can learn more about the app here.

Rihanna and MGMT will be on Jay-Z‘s next album, The Blueprint 3. Rihanna and Jigga made magic on with her umberella last in 2007, so who knows if lightening will strike during this storm again. The MGMT thing is kind of exciting, like, if you didn’t see it coming, you might be excited. Who wants to bet that Ed Droste will be on The Blueprint 4? [RS]

Kaskade lands in IcelandKaskade posted this picture on Twitter this morning of his plane in an emergency landing, but it never caught the attention of the international newsmedia. A United flight from London’s Heathrow to Chicago’s O’Hare had to touch down in Iceland this afternoon after it caught on fire. It’s unknown (but doubtful) if there are any other musicians on this flight, but as Kaskade himself said “I just aged 10 years but happy to be ALIVE.” [more]

The Beastie Boys announced the cancellation of their tour because Adam Yauch has cancer. But they also released a new track today. So it’s not all bad news…but yes, ok, mostly not good news [SG]. […keep reading…]

Pitchfork’s now annual music festival in Chicago has sold out…that is until they released 300 more tickets for each day of the fest. It goes off in Chicago this weekend at Union Park. The three day event features Built to Spill, Tortoise, Mew, Matt & Kim, Final Fantasy, and of course the Flaming Lips. Set times and tickets (while they last and until more are released) can be found here.

Basement Jaxx have formally announced their 5th album. Scars is due on XL this fall. Lead single “Raindrops” has gotten more acclaim than the first single from their previous Crazy Itch Radio, so maybe this will be a big one [RA].

Relieved, no doubt, that he’s not being sentenced to jail or fined bajillions, blogger Kevin Cogill was sentenced to a year of probation for posting the infamous Gunners album Chinese Democracy on Antiquiet, the site he contributes to. Additionally, Cogill will need to make an ad for the RIAA. Seriously, RIAA? Is that an effective use of your advertising budget? Cogill’s story should inspire people to do more to piss of dinosaur rock acts and the lobbyists that protects them [AQ] [BB]. Though, if you’re a fan of Jack White, you best not leak. He’s gone off on supposed journalists and others who have leaked albums before [EX]. […keep reading…]

July 14, 2009

Japan’s DJ Sashinami has been apprehended for running a series of scams. He then blamed the global recession for his inability to make a living solely as a DJ. Sad. Exit Festival is one fan’s exit; Jay-Z previews new material; Lily Allen is fun at festivals; Metric & MSTRKRFT assailed

July 13, 2009

There are definitely more festival deaths than we might suspect, but few are as dramatic as one from the Exit Festival in Serbia this weekend. The event drew from all over Europe with headliners The Prodigy, Moby, and Kraftwerk. Sadly, a 22 year old Londoner fell of a castle wall, dying later after being hospitalized. [...]
