If you haven’t heard Céu’s Vagarosa, the Brazilian’s singer’s 2009 sophomore album, it’s time to get seduced. Of course, there are the obvious comparisons to Bebel Gilberto – both women rework Brazilian musical traditions with contemporary, often electronic production. But while Gilberto heralds Rio’s bright colors and sunshine in her songs, Céu is from Sao Paolo and has an edgier, more nighttime palette. She doesn’t tour much, so this is a brief but good opportunity to see her.
Boy 8-Bit has been getting props from people like The Black Ghosts and Florence and the Machines for a hot minute now. This spring he tours North America, including dates during SXSW and WMC, possibly positioning for a global breakout hit. His new single, “The Keep,” drops in April, but in the meantime you can check his remix for La Roux’s “Quicksand” below.
Going to a Crystal Castles show is like stepping into some sort of tripped-out Tim Burton musical. Or at least, that’s how it felt at Vancouver’s Gossip Night Club on the last Saturday of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Flowing white curtains hung from the ceiling, with pink lights clashing against them. Spiral chandeliers reached out towards the floor. The bar was backlit with odd arrangements of red, black and yellow lights. And perhaps scariest above all was that a beer cost nearly nine dollars! Guess that’s the price you pay for living in an Olympic city.
There ain’t nobody out there making shit, quite like her, quite like Kid Sis and starting tonight everyone will get to see how on what is essentially Kid Sister’s first headlining tour. Now, this isn’t a major show -she’s playing mid size clubs and a few SXSW parties – but this is the first time since the release of the glorious Ultraviolet that Sis will be doing a full-on set. No stage-sharing, tag-teaming or supporting (save, perhaps at the Fool’s Gold party in Austin. With more dates being announced (Coachella?) there will be no excuse for not seeing her live on the Ultratour.
We’re digging Seabear, the hypnotic pop outfit form Iceland. They tour the eastern US and Canada next month with Via Tania and hopefully will be back this summer. For now, they’ve made a little video for “I’ll Build You A Fire” that will help you have psychadellic dreams. If you need to catch up on your Seabear, grab their track “Lion Face Boy” here.
While the UK isn’t exactly bringing home the gold in Vancouver, they are sending their golden boys to Vancouver (cheesy. sorry.). Calvin Harris has two mini North American tours, the first of which with his buddy Burns kicks off in Miami before they go all the way to Vancouver for two Olympics-related gigs in the host city. Harris is promoting “You Used To Hold Me,” the fourth single from 2009’s Ready for the Weekend. Burns, meanwhile, has been going back and forth across the Atlantic for the last year with new singles popping out all the time. His newest EP, So Many Nights, comes out in April.
The last time Groove Armada played live in the US it was kind of an experiment: Tom Findlay escorted a full band but did not appear on stage himself. Andy Cato wasn’t even on the continent. Findlay described the production as perhaps the future of the band, but for one reason or another, those plans [...]
If you haven’t heard the illicit leak of Robyn and Diplo’s “No Hassle,” we’re sorry for you. It has now been scoured from the interwebs (supposedly), only to return at some future date on a Robyn LP. It’s a lovely little dancehall ditty that makes us believe Diplo is the clean-nosed half of Major Lazer [...]
