It seems like HARD will come up with any excuse to throw a party. The latest endeavor is a pair of bi-coastal mini festivals headlined by none other than “global trendsetter” M.I.A. while featuring her hip-hop protege Rye Rye, raunchy rap duo Ninjasonik, and sets from Sleigh Bells, Theophilus London, and (HARD promoter) Destructo. The first night is July 17th at Los Angeles State Historic Park, the same place they throw FYF Fest. Then the lineup moves to South Island Field on Governors Island in New York on the 24th. Neither is a shabby venue for the simply named HARD LA and HARD NYC. With a new MIA album due this year and the Rye Rye on rebound (and perhaps about to finally break), it’s bound to be worth the fourty-five dollar ticket price (which in New York even includes a ferry pass!). We wonder, though, if M.I.A. recalls last year’s HARD Summer Fest. The singer and her fiancé were hanging out with friends backstage before being escorted out of the venue while cops in riot gear prepared to stave off the crowd. But hey, things happen.
