Here’s the thing, if you go to Austin for SXSW and think it’s an exhaustive, crazy, prop-your-eyeballs-open-with-toothpicks kind of week, you just have no idea the kind of madness that awaits you in Miami for Winter Music Conference. If anybody tries to offer a “recap” of the week’s events, they’re lying to you because they don’t remember. The following are tidbits cobbled together from photographic evidence and dreams that were likely based on realities. Then again, they could be lies.

After success at Ultra and before conquering Coachella and Movement, Pretty Lights is giving away a free EP, Making Up A Changing Mind. It’s a mix of classic hip-hop swagger, some choice samples and some French Touch punch. Pretty Lights is the moniker of Derek Vincent Smith, who has amassed a remarkably sturdy fanbase by playing some wicked live shows and cobbling together unusual sounds for recordings like this EP. The free giveaway is pretty savvy; even though he’s sold out some dates in the past, he’s still widely unknown and this gives a good opportunity for exposure. Oh, and he’s cute too. Tour dates, including the upcoming festivals, are below. You can get the EP here.

As Gabriel & Dresden, Josh Gabriel and Dave “The Wave” Dresden were arguably the most successful electronic music duo of the past decade. With hits tracks, remixes, and an acclaimed artist album, their blend of pop melodic sensibilities and alternately throbbing and lush beats made them a force to be reckoned with in the club and on the charts. That’s all changed in the past two years, and it’s been no secret of the group’s dissolution and subsequent ill feelings. Things escalated this week in Miami during WMC, however, when word got around of Dresden’s intent to serve Gabriel with a lawsuit while Gabriel was DJing. […keep reading…]
Here’s a reason to love Erykah Badu (as if you needed one): she does whatever she wants. This time, that means playing a “secret” show in New York this Saturday night inside Good Units at Hudson Hotel, with Spankrock, The Tony Castles, and MNDR. Is this the kind of record release party most Grammy winners put on for their 5th album? Probably not, but eBadu doesn’t pay attention to all that. This is an exclusive party with limited tickets available. Seeing Erykah perform new material will be a thrill, but seeing her in an intimate venue like this could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You can get in on it by buying tickets here.
It seems like HARD will come up with any excuse to throw a party. The latest endeavor is a pair of bi-coastal mini festivals headlined by none other than “global trendsetter” M.I.A. while featuring her hip-hop protege Rye Rye, raunchy rap duo Ninjasonik, and sets from Sleigh Bells, Theophilus London, and (HARD promoter) Destructo. The first night is July 17th at Los Angeles State Historic Park, the same place they throw FYF Fest. Then the lineup moves to South Island Field on Governors Island in New York on the 24th. Neither is a shabby venue for the simply named HARD LA and HARD NYC. With a new MIA album due this year and the Rye Rye on rebound (and perhaps about to finally break), it’s bound to be worth the fourty-five dollar ticket price (which in New York even includes a ferry pass!).
