February 2010

NYPC TGFWe’re so spoiled here in Southern California. We get our summer in February, and whine when we have to compromise with anything but sunshine. However, don’t those east coast bilzzards get you down. Put on your best coat, grab a coffee from that cafe you’ve been meaning to check out, or, if you so choose, stay home and catch up on your Netflix queue. For all of the homebodies out there, The Golden Filter just released the official version of “Hide Me,” the first single of their debut album Voluspa, due out in April. It’s a glittery trip into wonderland, with a subtle sweetness that will make your rained-in Friday night a little more bearable. For those who are a little more daring, there’s the Rory Phillips remix of the latest New Young Pony Club single ”Chaos.” It’s a bass-heavy discofied gem, and the perfect soundtrack to a night out, even if it’s a little damp outdoors.

Kid Sister presents the Ultratour

in tour news

Kid Sis gets readyThere ain’t nobody out there making shit, quite like her, quite like Kid Sis and starting tonight everyone will get to see how on what is essentially Kid Sister’s first headlining tour. Now, this isn’t a major show -she’s playing mid size clubs and a few SXSW parties – but this is the first time since the release of the glorious Ultraviolet that Sis will be doing a full-on set. No stage-sharing, tag-teaming or supporting (save, perhaps at the Fool’s Gold party in Austin. With more dates being announced (Coachella?) there will be no excuse for not seeing her live on the Ultratour.

Savoir Adore are more than just another Brooklyn duo. With harmonies to rival Rilo Kiley’s and an intricate melodic sensibility, they are just savoir adorable! (Smack me for that later, thanks). This number is pulled from their debut In The Wooded Forest (available now). They have a handful of dates including some at SXSW listed below. In the meantime, download “We Talk Like Machines.”

This video for Walter Schreifels‘ “Arthur Lee’s Lullaby” owns for several reasons. One, he comes close to flashing us in that bathrobe but thankfully does not. Two, we see him playing a real Wurlitzer. Three, there is confetti. Yeah! Confetti!! Taken from Schreifels’ forthcoming solo debut, An Open Letter To The Scene, the former hardcore dude is definitely more alty-folky here, but the sound still has a sort of punk tension about it. The album is said to contain a track called “The Ballad of Lil’ Kim.” We. Can’t. Wait.

new KeaneKeane will release a new collection of material this spring. Night Train will be an eight track “album” of songs the band wrote while on tour for their previous release, Perfect Symmetry. The collection includes live fave “My Shadow” as well as two collabos with K’naan – “Stop for a Minute” and “Looking Back” – making this release a 25% K’naan guest drop. While it’s to be accompanied by a North American tour, the length is a little curious. Granted, previous Keane LPs have maxxed out at 11 tracks, but when has 8 been enough for an entire album? We should consider the success of their US labelmate Lady Gaga, whose eight-song-long release The Fame Monster (mostly sold packaged with her full-length debut) has not only been a big seller, but a way to keep the artist in the spot without having to wait for even more material. In this sense, Gaga and Keane are exploring the newly revived territory between EP and LP lengths – possibly the future of recorded music and a bit of salvation for the record industry. Night Train drops May 11. Tour dates tba!

Classixx get another shot at a superstar remix, but if you compare this to some of their others (like our beloved mix of Phoenix’s “Lisztomania”) you might be surprised. There’s a lot of space in this track, which is bold and so refreshing. Classixx demonstrate the confidence to not show off, and Groove Armada’s sassy little melody shines through. So sassy, in fact, we think this emoticon says it best: :-P

Gonzales brings Beyoncé, Daft Punk, and Claude von Stroke together with envy

February 19, 2010

Chilly Gonzales is jealous, apparently. He wants what Beyoncé and Daft Punk have… namely their songs, but also possibly their audience. He brings their works together on Pianist Envy, his new mixtape, is really an eight song compilation of other people’s tunes assaulted by Gonzales’s piano. Last night, Gonzales did his penultimate piano-talking show at [...]

Seabear builds fires; swims to a city near you

February 19, 2010

We’re digging Seabear, the hypnotic pop outfit form Iceland. They tour the eastern US and Canada next month with Via Tania and hopefully will be back this summer. For now, they’ve made a little video for “I’ll Build You A Fire” that will help you have psychadellic dreams. If you need to catch up on [...]
