November 2009

While in New York working on her 11th studio album, Kylie Minogue has had some free time to do things frolic in leaves and cross the Brooklyn Bridge on foot. These exploits have been documented with a still camera and strung together as a video, set to a few remixes, for the below, the Fischerspooner remix of “Come Into My World.” What a lovely Thanksgiving weekend gift!

Who knew Puritans got down? Ok, well they so didn’t. But that’s cool because among the many historical inaccuracies in this Thanksgiving-themed music video advert, the least offensive are the sexualized pilgrims. Best line: “how’d I get these abs? crunches. how do I solve crime? hunches.” Happy Thanksgiving (you’re welcome)!

Royksopp liveReturning to Los Angeles after a four year absence, Röyksopp kicked off their North American tour last night at Club Nokia. The tour is in promotion of their latest release, Junior, but the hour-and-a-half long setlist promises a healthy selection of their catalogue and of course, a few surprises in between. Simply put, Royksopp was amazing. The duo took to the stage shortly after ten and broke right in to “Röyksopp. Forever.” They continued with more from their latest album and The Understanding, recapturing the crowd’s attention after a droney opening set by Jon Hopkins. Torbjorn and Svein made sure to talk to the crowd in between and express how happy they were to be back in Los Angeles.

YSPWSDWe’ll be honest, we might have forgotten this quintet… they have been overshadowed in the US by some of their flashier peers (CSS, Vampire Weekend, MGMT). Though if this Fleetwood Mac-ish promo shot is any indication, You Say Party! We Say Die! won’t be fading away anytime soon. Their second album, XXXX, drops in the US on Paper Bag Records this February. “There Is XXXX” is already getting traction on college radio and the album is getting good buzz in their Canadian homeland. and there’s a US tour in the works for this spring. Their Canadian tour is already in progress and runs through the month. In the meantime, they’ve posted some new songs on their ‘Space.

Motion City SoundtrackThough they’ve been a band for more than a decade, Motion City Soundtrack seem to be on the cusp of a breakthrough. Their fourth album and major label debut drops this January on Columbia records. Titled My Dinosaur Life, the band had Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus produce and rock producer legend Andy Wallace mix. While touring for MCS has always been a full-on, sweaty affair, this winter’s tour is but a jaunt. In the meantime, the band has created a tumblr page for frontman Justin Pierre to show you what it’s like to do in-stores and play your guitar in hotel rooms. MyDinosaurLife is actually pretty decent as band blogs go, mostly because Pierre himself is pretty accessible. Tour dates below.

NickodemusEarlier this year Bklyn DJ Nickodemus presented a highly aclaimed aritst album, Sun People, which is now getting a remix treatment all its own. Sun People Remixed comes out digitally next month on Thievery Corp’s ESL label. The assortment of remixers is pretty eclectic and mostly underground. J Boogie and Earthrise Soundsystem are probably the highest profile, but like the rest and Nicko himself, these are DJ’s DJs. They know more than Final Scratch. Keeping the sun shining, Nickodemus tours the continent this month before a few dates in New York, and New Years down under! Dates and tracks below.

Owl City again claims pole position with his nice guy act

November 12, 2009

Seriously, how has this happened? The Billboard Hot 100 has been taken over for the second time by Owl City’s “Fireflies,” a lovely little song about lightening bugs and stuff. Since its release last spring, the track has been a fave online and at the mythical college radio, but its assault on the pop charts [...]

Zeus of Canada, become their own; prep debut album

November 12, 2009

Toronto-based band Zeus has spent much of the last few years as a backing band for the likes of Jason Collett. Now they’re ditching the solo act and stepping forward as a band on their own. They look kind of like Kings of Leon (second album, shorter hair with beards and staches), and sound like [...]
