Ladyhawke, Semi-Precious Weapons, Julian Perretta, and NPSH kick it at some blogger’s party with a non-surprise set from The Gossip

As unlikable as he may be, Perez Hilton does have a decent taste in music. His tour made its final stop in Hollywood Saturday night, bringing the party, and a handful of surprises, to Avalon. The tour, cleverly named the “Perez Hilton Tour,” was curated, organized, and promoted (extensively) by the internet diva himself. New Zealand native Ladyhawke filled the headling slot, with support from other internet hype-acts, such as Frankmusic, Ida Maria (who dropped out after a handful of shows to be replaced by Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head), Julian Perretta, and Semi Precious Weapons.

All in all everything went smoothly at Avalon. Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head was the first act up, preaching side-pony tails and beard lust, although the predominantly pre-teen crowd didn’t seem to understand the humor. They were clearly more excited for the mop-headed Perretta, a fact the hundreds of screeching “I LOVE YOU JULIAN!”’s made explicit. His music didn’t quite seem to fit the ticket, but the crowd enjoyed his piano-laden ballads just as well. Semi Precious Weapons followed, possibly the most talked about act of the night, as their over-the-top and over-done New York glam rock surely left an impression on the crowd. Lead singer Justin Tranter went so far as to scale the balcony and harass the crowd, and while their performance may have been outlandish and “edgy,” it did feel a tad forced.

Ladyhawke finally came on, opening with her latest single, “Magic,” and running through most of the material from her newly re-released debut album. The artist also known as Pip Brown shredded on her guitar and did her best to try and get the crowd interested, as she commented on how dead everyone looked. Regardless, she stepped up her game from the last time she was in Los Angeles, interacting with the crowd a little more and avoiding technical problems entirely. Still, as enjoyable as her set was, it was short on time.

Perez took the stage promising a “surprise” guest to follow (eveyone already knew by that point), which, as the drum set on stage revealed, turned out to be The Gossip (big surprise). A short set-up later and Beth Ditto and her crew took to the stage, delving into hits like “Yr Mangled Heart” and “Listen Up!” as well as a smattering of songs from their new album, Music For Men. Surprise or not, it was nice to see the Arkansas natives return to a Los Angeles stage. Beth closed the night, and the tour thanking both Perez and the crowd for the opportunity to play, and for making a rather memorable night.
