We could have guessed this wouldn’t end well. Poor Lily Allen tried to take a stand against music piracy and illegal downloading, file sharing and shit via a blog she called “It’s Not Alright,” but was hosted at the honest and humble idontwanttochangetheworld. blogspot.com. But she kinda ripped off some text from another site. And people don’t like being told what to do in the first place. UK lad and singer Dan Bull posted a bitchy song on YouTube with some crap production set to her song “22″ about how she’s a hypocrite. Now, according to a Tweet this morning, she is retreating from technology, calling herself a “neo-luddite.”
The blog was dismantled over the weekend (or at least stripped of its content), and there seem to be no more plans for Allen to engage in this ongoing (but truly banal) debate. The attacks on Allen are really unnecessarily personal as she wasn’t saying anything others haven’t said before. Also, Allen has never claimed to be part of any camp – indie artists or establishment. She’s been pretty clear about being herself from the start. More importantly, who cares about this conversation? Some artists already make their music available for free and they’re reaping the rewards to some extent. Fewer people are getting rich from the music biz than ever and some – like Allen – get stuck in contracts that take a while to deliver financially in spite of some decent commercial and critical success. Where does this leave us in the end? From what we can tell… nowhere different than before, just without the lovely Lily tweeting her life for us.
