Song: I Believe In You
Album: Ultimate Kylie (2004)
One of two new songs for Ultimate Kylie, the second official (or third if you count Hits +) best of collection, “I Believe In You” was one of two songs Kylie co-wrote with the Scissor Sisters (the other, “White Diamond,” would lend its title to the docu/concert DVD). Set to a lush electro beat, Kylie replicates the Sisters’ Jake Shears’ falsetto with her own soprano on the octave-spanning chorus. Decked like a glittered-up Grecian muse, the video finds Min inside a slowly rotating neon birdcage, whilst singing about faith in the unknown and each other. Released just a year after Body Language, this song was closer to the disco hits of Fever and Light Years, even as it foretold of more experimental electro pop to come. Of course, this would be Kylie’s last single until “2 Hearts,” in 2007, and so much would happen before then.
Pluses: this isn’t just a song but a rallying call and a mantra
Fusses: do flight attendant hand gestures count as dancing? sure.
