Remember that one music junkie friend you had in the 90s who would always make thematic mixtapes. You know, like “Songs About the People On TV” would have “Buddy Holly” by Weezer and “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” by REM (oooh, that’s a good one). Well, Chicago’s Mannequin Men are compiling a series of weekly mixtapes and made them available on their label’s site. This week’s theme is “songs about other musicians” but specifically, musicians who are not making the song at hand. Included are tracks as diverse as The-Dream’s “Kelly’s 12 Play” about R. Kelly and Kathleen Hanna’s “I Wish I Was Him” about Evan Dando. That track about the Lemonheads frontman caused quiiiite a stir when it came out some 15 years ago. Sigh. Next week’s theme is “unintentional euphemisms,” which we can’t wait to get deep into. And yes, that was intentional.
The band’s new album, Lose Your Illusion, Too comes out tomorrow on Flame Shovel. And no, it’s not a track by track response to the Gunners album. But boy… what if it was. Their album release party goes off in Chicago later this week; a tour follows.
