Alec Empire might be best known as part of Atari Teenage Riot, though as producer of Patrick Wolf’s forthcoming The Bachelor, he has demonstrated his transformative power of his production. As heard on Wolf’s first single, “Vulture,” the alt-folk singer  has taken a darker and more industrial turn on this collection. Empire has remixed the second single, “Hard Times,” which you can download via RCRLBL. The video, above, was shot in NYC this spring, directed by Michel Gondry devotée Ace Norton.

Nick Urata of DeVotchKaIf the fabled Sasquatch monster was anywhere near central Washington this past weekend, you can bet he wasn’t too happy about all the fur. Heat was the word at this year’s Sasquatch! Music Festival, sparking a summer kind of party that the Pacific Northwest can usually only dream of.

Passion Pit’s energetic set drew a large crowd early on day one, using the cheery “Make Light” as the perfect opening to a weekend of sun. The unrelenting heat became so overwhelming that a stretch of cloud cover gained a burst of applause from fatigued fans during DeVotchKa’s main stage stint. Later, Animal Collective opened with the appropriate “Summertime Clothes,” and the Decemberists fittingly brought a bit of winter to the day, allowing the heat to subside just in time for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ It’s Blitz-heavy set. tiga-ciaoWith his first release three years, Tiga returns with Ciao!, physically released today in North America, an album that is equal parts electro as it is MTL death disco. While lead single “Shoes” could become his biggest hit to-date, its catchy chorus and easy punctuated rubberband bass belie the rest of the album’s distortion and anti-pop songwriting. Collaborating primarily with Soulwax for production and composition, Ciao! takes on more of a mission than its predecessor. This is not an introduction, this is the artist in the middle of the night at the peak of his form. It’s bolder, it’s a little colder, and it is 100% original – none of those much-loved covers make their way on here. “Luxury” will likely be the next hit, and the James Murphy-co-penned and produced “Gentle Giant” will be a fan favorite. Whether he’s referencing Nabokov on “Speak, Memory” or making a booty call on “Sex O’Clock” Tiga’s beats are so solid you forget he’s probably trying to subvert everything you hold dear. It’s the nearly 11 minute “Love Don’t Dance Here Anymore,” however, that reveals who Tiga really is: disco don extraordinaire.

Also out today is the much anticipated Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, from Phoenix. It’s a solid collection, but since they stopped innovating after 2004’s Alphabetical, there’s little to go crazy about on a steady collection of indie-alt-rock. […keep reading…]

While Fischerspooner remain one of the last “electroclash” groups standing, their run is clearly just getting started. With their latest album Entertainment receiving plenty of attention and the accompanying tour venturing abroad, the duo (and its other performers) have their work cut out for them. Their first gig in Los Angeles in a long time (excluding sporadic DJ sets), Saturday May 23 at the Avalon ultimately delivered.   […keep reading…]

thecocknbullkidShe’s opened for Santogold, CSS, and Late of the Pier, but while she has elements of each in her style (Santi’s deadpan delivery, CSS’s blinky 80s-ness, LOTP’s angsty), thecocknbullkid (née Anity Blay) definitely has her own style. IAMSOUND releases her debut EP, Querelle, in North America this August, and the four tracker will hopefully presage a mind-blowing debut. One of the tracks from Querelle, “I’m Not Sorry” is streamable via her MySpace and gives a good idea about the kind of heat she brings and the punch she packs. “Own My Own,” her first single from last summer (produced with Metronomy’s Joseph Mount) is not on the EP, but you can enjoy the video here or below.   […keep reading…]

Major and Rihanna

We’ve been sent these photos of the cartoon robo-rasta alias of Diplo and Switch known as Major Lazer. Last week he was in Rihanna’s bathroom. This week he was stalking Angelina and hanging with Jack Nicholson courtside. We assume he’s a Lakers fan. Who knows where he will pop up next? […keep reading…]

Classixx and Kitsuné decline cold shower, keep it dirty with the Cobrasnake

May 21, 2009

If there is one thing that defines LA (and please, there are many), we could say it’s the super skinny young and younger looking women who end up in front off Mark the Cobrasnake’s camera. We have no idea how Mr. Snake got involved with Kitsuné, but together, they’re releasing a track from Classixx featuring [...]
