March 2009

One time Kill Rock Stars artist, Nedelle Torrisi, former Deerhoof guitarist Chris Cohen plus Michael Carreira Aaron Olson constitute Cryptacize, the self-ascribed unconventional outfit that has been touring with people like Marnie Stern and Mirah. They drop their debut album, Mythomania, in April on Asthmatic Kitty records and then tour massively this spring and summer. The video for “Blue Tears” is a fun watch and gives a good sense of their sound, highlighted by Torrisi’s sweat but firm vocals. Their tour starts tonight in Philadelphia. Full dates below. The song is a simple one (you can download it here), and the video for “I’ll Be With You” is creatively shot on Super 8 (or Super 8 style) film, complementing the surfy guitars and lo-fi vocals.

With the release of his group’s third album around the corner, Fischerspooner’s Casey Spooner is preparing what is no doubt a grander project, their upcoming tour. For three nights only, Fischerspooner is allowing 60 people the chance to see the tour in an unusually intimate setting. Spooner speaks about the show and the tour like this:

“This is not like any show we have done before. The songs of the current album and other songs from our catalogue are set against a visual and sonic collage made from disparate literary and historical sources and theatrical traditions. It sounds strange and ridiculous but it all adds up. It becomes a very American story about ambition, experimentation, danger and the frontier. We wanted to create a show where it was impossible to decipher history or specific references. We are in a different place a decade later and this show reflects that.”

So high concept, but we can’t wait. Get tickets for these three shows at the Performing Garage on April 23rd, 24th, and 25th here. They go on sale tomorrow and will sell out quick so act fast!

We really want to like Keri Hilson. For one, she dresses well (last night in Brian Lichtenberg as she opened for Lil’ Wayne in LA – see their duet here). But also, she’s young and has a bunch of songwriting credits to her name. Even things you wouldn’t expect like Britney’s drugged up strip show, “Gimme More.” Sadly, “Knock You Down,” the lead single from her long-awaited debut isn’t all that catchy – all the more ridiculous given that it features Kanye and Ne-Yo. Maybe three super producer/songwriters is too many? The video – a MySpace Music exclusive – has some hot shoe porn though.

by Zel on March 30, 2009

in news

downtownWith his album with Switch on the horizon, Diplo has taken his label, the buzz making Mad Decent, to Downtown Records for a joint venture. Touted by Downtown CEO Josh Deustch as an “opportunity to continue to grow the Mad Decent brand in its own unique way, drawing on Downtown’s marketing, promotion, publishing and licensing resources to achieve tremendous successes,” the takes Mad Decent artists like Crookers and Rye Rye to the label that is now the home of Justice, Cold War Kids, and, um, the First Lady of France.

In addition to Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do, the Switch/Diplo collabo, future Mad Decent releases will come from Philly punk band Popo and ragga dub producer Rusko.

Barf. Nickelback swept Canada’s top music award show this weekend. But some prizes went to some interesting artists. Kardinall Offishall won Single of the Year and Best Rap Recording for “Dangerous,” while the Toronto solo artist known as Lights took home the title of Best New Artist.

In the most exciting/confounding turn, Montreal band The Stills won in the Best New Group category, despite the fact that their 2008 album, Oceans Will Rise, was their  third. The Vancouver Sun took notice of this oddity as well. They quoted the band’s Tim Fletcher, as saying “I know what it is. It’s basically because we put out a record that is doing well in Canada and is on a Canadian label and we’re considered a homegrown act now.” Oceans is on Arts & Crafts while their previous two discs came out on Vice.

Whatever. It’s a great album and deserved the other prize of the night for Alternative Album of the Year.
